Fine Arts

One of Union's most popular Fine Arts offerings is visual art. This discipline is taught to all elementary students and remains a strong favorite at the secondary level with more than 1,300 students enrolled in art, ceramics, painting or photography. Union offers one of the few  Advanced Placement visual art programs in the state. Many of our students turn their ability in art into scholarships at major art institutes and universities.

The vocal music program includes all elementary students and is a strong elective at the secondary level. Union has a long record of excellence in concerts, performances by show groups, Broadway musicals and competitions at the local and regional level. Our singers, utilizing Orff and Kodaly methods from grade one, have achieved an enviable record in performance and sight reading competitions. Many of our students have received major university scholarships and have become successful teachers and performers. Broadway musicals such as a recent production of Annie and performances of major works as part of Union’s “Masterworks” series are part of our vocal music program.

Union Public School is well represented in arts events such as TulsaFest, Tulsa Summerarts, the Oklahoma Summerarts Institute; and many of our students are featured in community theater musicals. Choruses comprised of younger students have been sought to accompany major performing artists when they perform in Tulsa.

Union Choral Parent Association

The purpose of the Union Choral Parent Association is to support Union's vocal programs, and to assist with activities, performances, trips and contests.

Members of the speech and debate squads compete several weekends throughout the school year. With individual honors at nearly every meet, including national qualifiers, these young people are representative of the wonderful program in place for debate and competitive speech.

Students at the High School have exceptional opportunities in the area of music theory and music technology. Union boasts one of the best Advanced Placement music theory courses in the state. Many students are able to skip one or even two years of college music theory because of Union's excellent preparation.

One exciting component of Union's curriculum is the piano lab. It accommodates 24 students and permits individually paced instruction as well as allowing full-class instruction and performance through the headphone system. Using this lab, students can explore composition, orchestration, arranging, ear training, sight singing, improvisation and self-paced study of music history.

Drama classes are another popular elective at the secondary level. Students can work to perfect their speaking and acting skills in this program which offers numerous public presentations each year. The High School Repertory Theater has received state-wide recognition for its superb performances in the one-act play category.  Presentations by drama groups at all levels are known for their excellence.

Union offers drama programs the middle and high school levels, including a middle school musical in the fall and an-district musical each spring. In addition, the High School and 9th Grade Center present other programs in the fall and spring, provide half-entertainment during pep assemblies and assist with video productions. Elementary schools also share dramatic presentations during special musical assemblies under the direction of their music teachers.

Unless otherwise stated, all tickets are $5. Ticket costs for the all-school musical will be announced closer to the performance. Showtimes are at 7 p.m. at the school sites. House opens at 6:30 p.m.

Union's mass media program grows more popular every year. With support through the district's focus on technology, Fine Arts anticipates a continued great future in this area. Students learn about yearbook and broadcasting, as well as digital imaging and web design, combining art and technology. Some of the classes – such as web design – also incorporate business class elements with them and are even taught by business teachers.

The Orchestra program has a reputation for excellence in the state, region and nation with numerous awards at each of these levels. Our students are well-represented in All-District and All-State orchestras, and students from Union Schools traditionally make up more than ten percent of the Tulsa Youth Symphony. Many students from the orchestra program have received scholarships at major universities throughout the nation as a result of their playing skills.

Union High School Orchestra Parents Booster Club

The purpose of the Union High School Orchestra Parents Club is to support Union's orchestra members and programs, and to assist the director with activities, performances, trips and contests.

Some of the activities supported by the Orchestra Parents include::

• All-State auditions the first Saturday of December
• All-State/OMEA Convention the last week of January
• State orchestra contest at Oklahoma State University in February
• Jazz Bands (Multiple organizations at the HS and HIS)
• District and state solo contests
• Regional and/or national contests in May; past contest destinations have included Orlando, Fla.; St. Louis, Mo.; Dallas, Texas; and Atlanta, Ga.

Full membership is open to any parent or legal guardian of a student participating in the Orchestra program at Union High School. Membership dues are $10 per year. Trip and contest funds are raised through various fundraising activities.

Associate membership is open to any person who is not the parent or legal guardian of a student participating in the Instrumental Music Department programs at Union High School but who is interested in the progress and development of these programs.

Most people know about the multi-talented High School marching band, the Renegade Regiment, which has been recognized on the state and national levels, along with color guard and winter guard. The marching band has even marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Union band program begins at the sixth grade level. Band offerings include the marching band, concert bands, pep bands, jazz bands, membership in full orchestras. 

The uniqueness of the Regiment resides in its consistently meeting high standards in all aspects of music performance.  The marching program is recognized across the United States as an innovator in costuming, props, music and show design. The excitement generated by brilliant uniforms, quality musical performance, and marching precision are the elements that attract crowds and draw rave reviews and positive responses from judges across the United States.

One of the most active parent groups in all of Union, the parents help ensure the success of students in the Renegade Marching Band Regiment. Since 1979, Union Band Parents Club has been known on a national level as one of the finest booster organizations of its kind.
